Isolated storms packing heavy winds threaten DC area Thursday evening

Isolated storms could pummel parts of the D.C. region Thursday evening with heavy winds.

Temperatures soared Thursday afternoon well into the 90s, increasing the potential for severe weather, according to 麻豆官网 meteorologist Mike Stinneford.

“There is a lot of juice for, a lot of fuel for severe thunderstorms in the next several hours, so do watch out for the possibility of some damaging winds of 60-70 mph,” Stinneford said.

The area got its first taste of severe weather just before 3 p.m., when the National 麻豆官网 Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia and part of Montgomery County, Maryland. Wind gusts up to 60 mph were the primary threat.

Storms should diminish before sunset, according to Stinneford. More afternoon and evening storms are possible Friday, as temperatures again are set to climb into the mid-90s. It could feel as hot as 102 on Friday afternoon. Just like Thursday, damaging winds will be the main concern with any storms that do pop up Friday.

The weekend may not bring relief from rough weather, as more storms afternoon storms are in the forecast Saturday with the potential for even more damaging winds.
