WASHINGTON — A 12-year-old girl is still in the hospital a month after police say a carjacking suspect crashed into a minivan she was in, sending her flying from the vehicle in Herndon, Virginia. While she heals, the family’s hospital bills continue mounting.

Amran Djama was recently transferred to a rehabilitation facility where she’ll begin therapy, her father announced three days ago. Moustapha Djama posted the update on his , which the family set up in hopes of helping out with the mounting hospital bills.

Both the crash and the bills are taking a financial and emotional toll on the Amran’s parents, reported.

Just over a month ago, on Dec. 27 in Herndon, carjacking suspect Brandon Vinson, 28, of Adelphi, Maryland was trying to get away from police when they say he slammed into the family’s minivan, which was carrying six people: Amran’s mother; her siblings; and a young friend.

Everyone else is out of the hospital except for Amran.

The victim’s father said Amran had undergone surgery two weeks ago and since then has been improving. Amran was in a coma after the crash and she finally opened her eyes on Jan. 10 but still needs to be on a breathing tube, according to her father.

Amran suffered brain injuries after being ejected from the van. Her father asks for continued prayers for his daughter’s recovery.

Vinson is not only accused of carjacking but also of leading police on a wild car chase in Fairfax County that ended in the serious crash.

Vinson’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 13.
