WASHINGTON — Maryland regulators say you can opt out of accepting your utilities’ smart meters, but do you have to pay for it?
Under a , rate payers would have to pay an initial surcharge, and then a monthy fee, if they want to opt out of accepting the so-called smart meters.
Maryland Delegate Glenn Glass, R-Cecil County, says they shouldn’t have to do so. He’s pushing two bills to address the situation: One would let you opt out without having to pay those fees; the second would prohibit power companies from selling information that the smart meters can collect.
