5 people shot at Virginia State University prompting campus lockdown

Students at Virginia State University were on lockdown for several hours early Saturday morning after a campus shooting.

The shooting took place shortly before 1:30 a.m. when officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside of campus residence halls in the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, .

The university said all five people were transported to hospitals.

One person is in critical condition and four others have non-life-threatening injuries, the university said.

The lockdown was lifted around 8 a.m.

The Chesterfield County police are leading the investigation into the shooting.

VSU is a historically Black university founded in 1882. The university is located in Chesterfield County, about 20 miles south of Richmond.
