Would-be presidential assassin John Hinckley granted release

WASHINGTON — A federal judge granted would-be presidential assassin John W. Hinckley Jr. full-time release from St. Elizabeths Hospital.

Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and has been in confinement at St. Elizabeths in Washington since the shooting.

Hinckley, 61, has been granted release to his mother in Williamsburg, Virginia. A wide range of conditions has been attached to his release.

He could be released as early as Aug. 5.
