Slow-moving, tropical-like storms hit DC area, bringing possible flooding

Thursday brought a bit of relief from the humidity, but not from scattered showers and storms that may bring damaging winds and heavy rainfall before midnight.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 9:45 p.m. Thursday for D.C.and parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties. Southeastern Prince William County was issued a flash flood warning in effect until 1:45 a.m. Friday.

Arlington County, parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties; and the cities of Falls Church and Alexandria were under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:30 p.m.

The evening began with a flash flood watch issued for D.C.; parts of Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties in Virginia; and parts of Montgomery and Prince George’s County in Maryland. It remains in effect until 2 a.m. Friday.

A flood warning is in effect until 2:30 a.m. Friday for parts of Fairfax County in Virginia and Prince George’s County in Maryland as well.

The storms are slow-moving and could produce some tropical-like downpours. The National 鶹 Service said the storms could have damaging winds that could cause some trees and large branches to fall and roadways to be blocked by downed trees.

After a cool start, Thursday’s highs were in the upper 80s to mid-90s, with a heat index between 96 to 101.

Friday will warm to around 90 degrees, and the weekend is looking dry, hot and a bit humid with plenty of sunshine.

  • Friday: Partly sunny. Hot but a little less humid. Scattered PM t’storms, mostly south of DC. Highs: mid-80s to near 90.
  • Saturday: Partly to mostly sunny. Hot and a bit humid. Highs: upper 80s to low 90s.
  • Sunday: Hazy, very hot and humid. Isolated afternoon thunderstorm possible. Highs: low 90s.
