The legendary actor was known for his roles in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “In the Heat of the Night” and “Lilies of the Field.”
The Guardian Nassau newspaper was the first to confirm Poitier’s death.
The actor, who went on to become a director, has been honored by the Kennedy Center.
In 2009, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-President Barack Obama.
