Two people are dead and a third person is fighting for her life following a house fire in Southeast D.C. Sunday morning.

Firefighters were battling flames at a 2-story town house in the 3400 block of 23rd Street, according to D.C. Fire and EMS

“They made an aggressive attack immediately to put the fire out while other crews simultaneously entered the second floor to search for victims,” said D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly.

They found a 64-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman dead in the home.

When searching the home, crews found an 85-year-old woman alive.

“They did find a woman on the second floor who they removed via the ladder,” Donnelly said.

She was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters remain on the scene and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
