Capital One Arena to go mobile-only for almost all tickets

Capital One Arena will eliminate all paper tickets starting in 2020, including for Washington Capitals and Wizards games and all concerts held at the venue.

The switch will happen gradually, with 2020 playoff games for both teams going fully digital for season-ticket holders. Tickets for all concerts announced after Jan. 1, 2020, will also be fully digital.

One-off online purchases for individual sporting events had already switched to mobile delivery since the 2017-2018 season. The only way to use a physical paper ticket starting in 2020 will be to purchase it in-person at the box office, according to a spokeswoman for Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the venue, Capitals, Mystics and Wizards.

Monumental announced the switch Wednesday, saying that “a vast majority of our fans” have already been taking advantage of the digital ticket option. It will partner with Ticketmaster, using the latter’s Ticketmaster Presence system, which Monumental said will prevent fraud,…
