‘This was a miracle’: Police ID driver of car who struck father, daughter in harrowing crash /dc/2023/07/this-was-a-miracle-father-daughter-survive-harrowing-car-crash-officials-say/ Mon, 10 Jul 2023 15:15:56 +0000 /?p=24971155 Police have identified the D.C. man who officers say crashed a car into a father and daughter, leaving both with serious injuries Saturday.

Thaniyyah Veney, 32, of Southeast D.C., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, leaving after colliding, assault with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault, .

Around 1 p.m. on Saturday, D.C. police were called to the 3200 block of 4th Street Southeast, where they said Veney lost control of a Ford 500, ran a stop sign at the intersection of 4th and Savannah Streets, jumped a curb and crashed into a house.

D.C. police say Veney struck a parked and occupied vehicle, then struck the man and his 5-year-old daughter before striking the house.

The suspect was located in a nearby alley by responding officers, D.C. police told 鶹.

Emergency personnel found a man at the scene after being struck by the car and a 5-year-old girl trapped under the vehicle, according to preliminary reports. The girl was conscious and breathing when she was evacuated by helicopter to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Her father faced critical injuries and was taken to the hospital on the ground by an ambulance.

Ward 8 Council member Trayon White, who was at Children’s National Hospital Saturday, said “Baby Raci” was alive and in stable condition after being struck.

“She suffered a broken shoulder, hip, and a fractured skull. She is out of surgery and will be monitored closely,” White wrote in a post on Instagram. “This was a miracle. Mom and Dad want to thank everyone.”

Local fallen firefighters honored at memorial in Frederick Co. /maryland/2023/05/local-fallen-firefighters-honored-at-memorial-in-frederick-co/ Sun, 07 May 2023 11:45:41 +0000 /?p=24778055 On the eve of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, family and friends lit candles in decorated bags in honor of their fallen loved ones at a service Saturday evening in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

During the 42nd annual ceremony, 144 firefighters were remembered, including six from Maryland and three from Virginia, who died in 2022 and in previous years.

Maryland

  • Paul Butrim — Baltimore City Fire Department
  • Kenneth Lacayo — Baltimore City Fire Department
  • Kelsey R. Sadler — Baltimore City Fire Department
  • James Perrine Seavey Sr. — Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department
  • Kelly W. Frye — City of Cumberland Fire Department
  • David Insley Jr. — Salisbury Fire Department

Virginia

  • Kimberly A. Schoppa — Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department
  • Robert W. “Bobby” Nelms — Fries Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department

“They showed courage, they were protectors, they had noble qualities and they made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Maggie Lawrence, chaplain of the Tennessee Federation of Fire Chaplains.

During the service, Emmitsburg Mayor Donald N. Briggs remembered their bravery.

“For your contributions to your communities across the country, responding to that call in the middle of the night. Always the challenge is there and begs the answer,” Briggs said. “If it wasn’t for the firefighters we honor today, they answered that and their answer was ‘yes.'”

Each firefighter’s name will be inscribed on a bronze plaque in honor of their sacrifices. On Sunday, bells across the United States will ring to honor those who died.

According to police, Gerald Wayne Koogle, 42, opened fire at the officers just before midnight on Friday from his home on Longfellow Court.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says it received a 911 hang-up call and, just before the call disconnected, heard a woman say a man was threatening her.

When deputies arrived, they tried to get Koogle to open the door. That’s when he fired several rounds at officers through a window at close range, police say.

The deputies were able to get to safety, and shortly after, the woman exited the home.

Police negotiated with Koogle, who eventually surrendered. Two other residents were safely removed from the home.

Authorities were able to recover an AR-15 semi-automatic refile and other weapons and ammunition after the incident.

Charges against Koogle include first-degree attempted murder.

He is being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center.

The left southbound lane of I-95 south of Maryland Route 216 was blocked for nearly three hours after the load attached to a small flatbed trailer came off, said 鶹’s Dave Dildine in the Traffic Center.

The incident was cleared at about 6 p.m., Dildine said.

Traffic was “heavy and slow from 175 past 32 and 216 before the Patuxent River,” he said before the scene was cleared.

Maryland State Police said the trailer became destabilized and is damaged. It’s unclear whether the truck itself or the trailer it was towing struck a guard rail, police said. No injuries were reported.

Separately, Maryland State Police said someone was killed when a single vehicle went off the road and down an embankment near Route 212.
