Missing teenager found dead in Bethesda /montgomery-county/2017/12/missing-teenager-found-dead-in-bethesda/ /montgomery-county/2017/12/missing-teenager-found-dead-in-bethesda/#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2017 12:13:53 +0000 /?p=17045366 WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old boy reported missing Saturday night was found dead Sunday in a wooded area of Bethesda, Maryland, and detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department are seeking information on the case.

Police say the body of Navid Nicholas Sepehri, of Bethesda, was found in the 6500 block of Laverock Lane near the Bannockburn Swim Club around 5 p.m.

The teenager was reported as a missing person to the police department around 11:30 p.m. Saturday after he did not return home, according to police.

Police say the cause of Sepehri’s death is unknown at this time. Officials are asking anyone with information on the caseÌýto call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the teenager’s death, police said.

Sepehri was a senior at Walt Whitman High School, officials said. A support team of psychologists and counselors is at the school Monday to provide counseling and support to the students.

In a letter to parents,ÌýAlan Goodwin, the principal of Walt Whitman High School, wrote, “Initial information suggests Navid’s death may have been accidental, but we do not have details at this time.”

Below is the full letter the principal sent to parents:

Dear Whitman Community,

It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Navid Sepehri, one of our 12th grade students. Initial information suggests Navid’s death may have been accidental, but we do not have details at this time. Navid’s sister, Nika, is a freshman at Whitman, as well.

For those of you who knew Navid, we ask that you remember and celebrate his love of art and commitment to others. For those of you who did not know Navid, we ask that you support Navid’s friends and family during this time of loss.

It is very difficult for all of us to face the death of a young person. Monday, a support team of psychologists, counselors, and pupil personnel workers from Montgomery County Public Schools will work with our staff members to provide counseling and support to students. Students who need additional support should contact their school counselor. Counselors will be available in the media center all day.

Your child may be coming home with questions and worries. Our community has experienced a tremendous loss in the last weeks. I am confident in our ability to support one another as we grieve the loss of Navid. Please be attentive to each other and keep our staff informed of any way we can support our students.

I know you join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to Navid’s family. When we receive word regarding funeral arrangements, I will share the information with you. Again, please do not hesitate to contact the school at 301-320-6600 if you have any concerns or questions.

The boy was being watched by his neighbor in a townhouse in the 3000 block of Bellamy Way, officials said. The man was putting away a weapon around 6:40 p.m. when the gun went off, according to police.

The boy was shot in the upper body, and the man “grabbed the child, wrapped him up, ran him outside, put him in his vehicle and raced him over” to a hospital nearby, officials said.

Police said the neighbor was very distraught and cooperating with the investigation.

He is a former military member, according to police.

“We do believe this was a tragic, tragic accident,” said Jennifer Donelan, spokeswoman for the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Police said there is no reason to believe the neighbor had the gun illegally.

The family of the victim said in a statement through a spokesman that they want to remain anonymous.

I-95 southbound reopens in Elkridge after truck fire /howard-county/2017/09/southbound-i-95-lanes-in-elkridge-closed-after-truck-catches-fire/ /howard-county/2017/09/southbound-i-95-lanes-in-elkridge-closed-after-truck-catches-fire/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 20:02:38 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=15770366 WASHINGTON — No one was injured from a truck fire that blocked southbound Interstate 95 in Elkridge, Maryland, for hours on Friday before lanes reopened midafternoon.

The lane closures created 7-mile backups stretching to the Baltimore Beltway during the height of the morning rush hour.

The truck fire, which started around 6:30 a.m., appeared to be in control at one point, but Howard County fire crews were called back to the scene when the fire reignited around 8 a.m.

Shortly before 11 a.m., dumpsters arrived at the scene to assist with cleanup.

All lanes reopened to traffic about 2 p.m.

The tractor trailer was transporting clothing, officials said.

Friday’s truck fire occurred about 1 mile from the scene of one of the region’s most deadly vehicle fires in recent years. In 2004, a gasoline tanker plunged off Interstate 895 and exploded when it fell onto I-95 below, killing four people. The northbound lanes were closed through two rush hours between D.C. and Baltimore.

And earlier this year, a tanker skidded off I-95 closer to Baltimore during freezing rain. The tanker exploded when it fell off an overpass near Caton Avenue, killing the driver.

The heat generated by large vehicle fires can also damage pavement. So even after the fire is put out, an inspection can prolong lane closures.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to stay alert during the work period, which involves the repair and repainting of the bridge’s steel rails.

Think you have good intuition? New study says you probably don’t /education/2017/07/intuition-study-research/ /education/2017/07/intuition-study-research/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 14:13:00 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=14921491 WASHINGTONÌý— If there’s one thing intuition can’t tell you, it’s just how intuitive you actually are.

A new study from the University of Kent School of Psychology found that people who thought they were highly intuitive did not show any more intuition than people who considered themselves less intuitive.

“Nine out of 10 times, someone who said they have high confidence in his or her intuition did not perform any better than someone with low confidence in his or her intuition,” the study’s co-authorÌýDr. Mario Weick said.

For the study, 400 people from the United States and United Kingdom were asked to assess their own levels of intuition and given tasks to measure how much confidence they had in their intuition.

Participants were then tested using word and picture association. The associations followed certain patterns and were designed to encourage learning the rules without participants noticing what was happening, according to the study.

Results from the tasks showed that those who described themselves as intuitive performed equally well as people who described themselves as less intuitive, Weick said.

The more individuals perceive themselves to be intuitive — as opposed to rational — the more they tend to believe that their intuitions lead to good decision outcomes, research shows.

However, the study concluded that while confidence in your own intuition may have some bearing on how your gut instincts kick in, “the predictive validity is likely low and may lead to frequent misjudgements.”

Weick said he hopes to see more research done in fields where people base decisions on intuition, such as professions in the financial services sector.

“It’s quite important to know how much we can rely on our introspection — do we need to be perhaps a bit more cautious when we feel we have a strong intuition to something that provides an indicator, an index, of the quality of a decision?”
