DC Council considers bill to stop cooperation with ICE /dc/2019/10/dc-council-considers-bill-to-stop-cooperation-with-ice/ /dc/2019/10/dc-council-considers-bill-to-stop-cooperation-with-ice/#respond Sat, 05 Oct 2019 17:18:30 +0000 /?p=20249441 A D.C. Council member is proposing emergency legislation to prohibit the District from cooperating with federal immigration agencies.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared the District a sanctuary city, and a law passed in 2012 set restrictions on when the Department of Corrections can hold individuals in custody past their release dates to comply with immigration detainer requests. But council member Charles Allen, who represents Ward 6, said the law is no longer sufficient.

“Since passage of the act, ICE’s practices have evolved to include requesting notification of individuals’ release dates, in addition to or instead of holds,” said Allen in a proposed resolution.

The bill would stop city agencies from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement unless provided a judicial warrant or order. This includes sharing information with ICE, complying with detainer requests or allowing ICE agents to enter city facilities, such as the jail, juvenile justice facilities and St. Elizabeths Hospital.

Under the current policy, the Department of Corrections notifies ICE 48 hours before releasing an inmate with an ICE detainer. In August, 43 undocumented immigrants were picked up from city facilities by ICE between January 2016 and June 2019.

“The District has a responsibility to ensure that all residents are respected and able to interact with public safety officials without fear of adverse civil immigration action,” Allen said in the resolution.

Ahead of planned ICE raids in July, D.C. police released videos telling the public their officers are prohibited from asking about immigration status and do not enforce federal immigration laws.

In recent months, several other local law enforcement agencies have clarified their policies on working with federal immigration agencies.

Montgomery County announced in July that all county agencies are prohibited from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement or even asking people about their immigration status.

In Prince George’s County, police said they will only cooperate with ICE when “the primary focus of a federal investigation is not immigration violations.”

The D.C. Council will review the bill, co-sponsored by council members David Grosso (I-At Large), Brianne K. Nadeau (D-Ward 1) and Elissa Silverman (I-At Large), at its meeting on Oct. 8.

Arlington woman sues local kabob chain after salmonella outbreak linked to hummus /arlington/2019/10/arlington-woman-sues-local-kabob-chain/ /arlington/2019/10/arlington-woman-sues-local-kabob-chain/#respond Sat, 05 Oct 2019 09:39:20 +0000 /?p=20249184 An Arlington woman is suing Moby Dick House of Kabob after a salmonella outbreak related to hummus made at least 17 people sick in Maryland and Virginia since September 10.

Golbahar Jalali-Jafari claims she suffered flu-like symptoms in the days after she ate the restaurant’s hummus last month at a friend’s baby shower.

She claims she continues to have symptoms, although a stool sample she submitted tested negative for salmonella. In the suit, her lawyers say several friends who attended the baby shower and also ate the hummus tested positive for salmonella.

The Maryland Department of Health announced it is investigating a cluster of salmonella infections that have been linked to the Persian kabob chain restaurant. The chain has voluntarily stopped the sale of its hummus, and the Health Department said that consumers who bought hummus from any of the chain’s restaurants should discard it.

Jalali-Jafari is asking for $500,000 in damages, saying Moby Dick failed to comply with federal and state laws in the production and distribution of its hummus.

Maryland tops Virginia as richest state in nation /local/2019/10/maryland-tops-virginia-as-richest-state-in-nation/ /local/2019/10/maryland-tops-virginia-as-richest-state-in-nation/#respond Tue, 01 Oct 2019 13:27:59 +0000 /?p=20233423 Maryland is the richest state in the U.S., according to a ranking by financial news and opinion website 24/7 Wall Street, which put Virginia at number 10.

The rankings were based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which included median household income, poverty rate and unemployment.

Maryland had a median household income of $83,242 in 2018. Virginia’s median household income was more than $10,000 less — recorded as $72,577 in 2018.

Maryland also had a lower poverty rate than Virginia in 2018 at 9% compared to Virginia’s poverty rate of 10.7%.

Virginia’s unemployment rate was lower than Maryland’s — 3% in 2018. Maryland’s unemployment rate was 3.9% in 2018.

The rankings also factored in the level of education in the states. Both Maryland and Virginia came in as some of the most educated states in the county. In Maryland, 40.8% of adults had a bachelor’s degree; that number was 39.3% of adults in Virginia.

The 10 “richest states,” according to 24/7 Wall Street:
1. Maryland
2. New Jersey
3. Hawaii
4. Massachusetts
5. Connecticut
6. California
7. New Hampshire
8. Alaska
9. Washington
10. Virginia

Nats gear up for NL wildcard game; pitcher Barrett plays special role /washington-nationals/2019/10/nats-gear-up-for-nl-wildcard-game-pitcher-barrett-plays-special-role/ /washington-nationals/2019/10/nats-gear-up-for-nl-wildcard-game-pitcher-barrett-plays-special-role/#respond Tue, 01 Oct 2019 11:38:15 +0000 /?p=20233060 Washington is gearing up to take on the Milwaukee Brewers in its first National League wild-card game at Nationals Park Tuesday night.

Mike Ploger, one of the Nationals’ in-stadium hosts, said the team expects 45,000 people to attend, which would be a sellout crowd.

“We’ve been [in the postseason] five of the past eight years which is amazing, but you can’t take it for granted,” he said. “Being here, taking in this energy and this atmosphere, there is nothing is like it.”

In a special tribute, relief pitcher Aaron Barrett will throw the pregame first pitch. Barrett, who pitched at Nats Park for the first time since 2015 in the final game of the regular season, is not on the postseason roster.

Barrett had Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery later that year, then broke his pitching arm in 2016 and missed all of 2017 and 2018. He was called up from the minors in September to make his return to the majors and pitched in two games for Washington — both on the road.

“He’s fought very hard to overcome those injuries,” said Jake Burns, the Nationals’ executive vice president of business operations. “It’s a very meaningful moment for us.”

Max Scherzer will throw out the first pitch of the game at 8:08 p.m. Since a 2013 AL Division Series victory for Detroit, Scherzer has made seven postseason appearances, in a mix of starting and relieving roles, and his teams are 0-7. Scherzer himself is 0-4 in that stretch, lowering his career record in the postseason from 4-1 to 4-5.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner was 11-7 with a 2.92 ERA was slowed by back trouble this season. The Nats will have Stephen Strasburg (18-6, 3.32) ready in the bullpen.

Brandon Woodruff (11-3, 3.62) will start for the Brewers. He has pitched in only two games since returning from a strained left oblique that sidelined him for nearly two full months; he went two hitless innings each time.

The Nationals are 0-3 in winner-take-all postseason games, all at home. The Nats have never advanced in four previous trips to the playoffs over the past eight years.

The Brewers made it to Game 7 of the NL Championship Series last year before falling to the Dodgers. Milwaukee surged to the playoffs this September despite losing NL MVP Christian Yelich to a broken kneecap.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and all fans will receive a red rally towel as they enter the park. Burns said he encourages fans to get to the stadium early and participate in the pregame festivities.

“There’s nothing better than postseason baseball,” he said.

Â鶹ąŮÍř’s Melissa Howell contributed from Nationals Park. The Associated Press also contributed to this story.
